BURRESS — For much of the last three decades, the winds of consolidation have blown through Nebraska’s grain-handling industry with hurricane force.
Allow yourself to get caught up in all the news about mergers and acquisitions, and the sight of a family-owned grain elevator still standing upright 4 miles from the nearest highway can seem almost a miracle.
But as clouds of gravel dust drift away, there’s no obvious tilt to the 100 feet of wood and corrugated tin that anchors Manning Grain. Nor are there any signs of panic 60 miles west of Lincoln at one of the few Southeast Nebraska elevator operations that hasn’t become a branch of some distant headquarters.
Kent Manning, 43, is calmly supervising the early stages of construction on a 500,000-bushel steel bin. His brother, Chris, and Kent’s sons, Tyler, 14, and Mitchell, 6, are part of the same sweaty scene.
Inside a former railroad depot, Kent’s wife, Cindy, also the mother of 11-year-old Brooke, stands at the scale and deals with the routine of weighing arriving and departing grain trucks.
In between busy harvests, Kent’s father, Tom, 77, has time to take a break from the business end of a scoop shovel...
